The APP holds clinics several times per year. There is a series of four to eight mid-winter clinics held at various resorts in the western states. Each of these clinics is attended by 12-36 patrollers and lasts for one or two days. Each spring there is a large clinic attended by 150 to 250 patrollers which lasts for four days. The clinics involve nine subjects. Each of the subjects has a written test and either an oral or practical exam/interview. There is a Head Judge who is responsible for content and grading in each subject. Each Head Judge publishes a criteria sheet (click on the name of the subject).

The written test is taken as a first step. A score of 80% will allow a patroller is proceed to take the practical exam. The result of the practical exam is what will determine the status of a patroller for that subject and is judged on a scale of 1-10. A score of 8 and above is classified as "Certified". A score of 7 is classified as "Associate". A score below 7 is "Sustaining". When a patroller achieves an "Associate" score in all nine subjects, he/she is then classified as an "Associate Member". When a "Certified" score is reached for all nine subjects, the patroller then is considered to be a "Certified Member". Nearly 500 patrollers have achieved a "Certified" status in the 30 years of testing.
